Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday there's "no reason for alarm" as President Donald Trump, backed by Republicans in Congress, pursues legal challenges to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden's election victory. "Anyone who's running for office can exhaust concerns about counting in any court of appropriate jurisdiction," McConnell said after Republican Senators chose party leaders Tuesday. McConnell said: "I don't think anything that's occurred so far interrupts an ordinary process of moving through the various steps that I indicated and allowing, if there is a new administration, it to work through the transition. All of these steps will be taken at the appropriate time." GOP Senators chose party leaders with few changes at the top, but it's unclear who will be the majority leader in the new Congress with no party having secured control of the Senate until a January runoff election in Georgia. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., won another term as Republican leader, his office said, cementing his role as the longest-serving GOP leader in U.S. history. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. won his party's support to stay on leading the Democrats, according to a Democrat granted anonymity to discuss the closed-door balloting. Most of the current leaders were reinstated in Tuesday's private party elections, except for Florida Sen. Rick Scott who will be the next chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Scott was unopposed for chairmanship, after announcing he would run for the post late last week. He replaces the current NRSC chairman, Indiana Sen. Todd Young.
