Storefronts across the country are being boarded up as fear of post-election civil unrest grows. In San Francisco's Union Square shopping district, dozens of high-end department stores and boutique clothing and jewelry stores spent Monday boarding up their windows. In Seattle, workers boarded up restaurants and retail shops in the city's downtown core and Capitol Hill neighborhood. Both cities have seen multiple protests during unrest this year, with some resulting in significant property damage. While some businesses were preparing on Monday, many buildings and store fronts in both cities have been boarded up for months. Security experts have warned of possible protests, no matter the outcome of the election, particularly in battleground states and in the downtown areas of cities where protests over police brutality recently took place. Oregon Governor Kate Brown put that state's National Guard on standby for a 48-hour period around Election Day and used her executive authority to activate a unified command of state troopers, sheriff's deputies and Portland police to handle any protests. Portland has seen near nightly protests for five months after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and many demonstrations end in vandalism, arson and violent clashes with officers. President Donald Trump's call for a crackdown on protests in Democratic-led cities has attracted right-wing groups to the city for "law and order" rallies and pro-Trump events.
