The new advice says age alone is a reason to take extra precautions to minimise contact with others, as England enters a second lockdown. Those over the age of 60, and younger people with underlying health conditions such as diabetes and asthma are being warned that they could be at higher risk of severe illness from coronavirus. Pregnant women and those who are morbidly obese are being given the same advice, which says they “should be especially careful to follow the rules”. During the first lockdown, people defined as “clinically extremely vulnerable” were given advice to “shield” themselves. This time, the Government has abandoned the shielding programme.
