IGN’s Senior News Editor Jonathon Dornbush talks about how the PS5 price reveal stokes demand for its next-gen consoles. During September’s Playstation 5 reveal, Sony finally dropped the last piece of Playstation 5 news (PS5 price and PS5 release date) PlayStation fans were looking for. The Playstation 5 Digital Edition is priced at $399, while the Playstation 5 Physical Edition is priced at $499. Both the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 physical edition will be released on November 12, 2020. Be sure to watch this op-ed to learn more about how the Playstation 5 price for the digital edition provides the cheapest price point to get a full next-gen experience, while also locking customers into the Playstation store’s digital market place where Sony can capture a larger piece of the profits. PS5 vs PS5 Digital Edition Even though the PS5 digital edition is $100 cheaper than the physical PS5, it will still allow gamers to experience all PS5 games and first-party Playstation 5 games (like Spider-Man Miles Morales) with full 4k graphics and raytracing. PS5 Digital Edition vs. Xbox Series S While the Playstation 5 Digital Edition still costs more than the Xbox Series S, it delivers the full next-gen console experience. To hit the $299 price for the Xbox Series S, Microsoft had to make hardware compromises with the console’s GPU and ram. Those hardware limitations affected the Xbox Series S specs - mean the Xbox Series S doesn’t have the same 4k capabilities as the Xbox Series X. Instead, the Xbox Series S delivers its games in 1440p (2k) resolutions. To be sure, its no slouch, but spending the extra $100 on the PS5 Digital Edition could be worth if gamers truly value the experience of uncompromised next-gen gaming.
