Hurricane Sally brought wild winds and rain to the Gulf Coast of Florida and Alabama overnight September 15 into September 16, making landfall as a Category 2 storm. The National Hurricane Center said Wednesday morning around 4 am local time that the hurricane was about to make landfall and would bring “historic and catastrophic flooding in parts of northwest Florida and southern Alabama.” The National Weather Service (NWS) reported 24.8 inches of rain in Pensacola as of 7 am Wednesday. This video shows roiling floodwaters carrying debris past a home in Pensacola, recorded by Peter Hay. “This is just so surreal,” Hay says in the video. “We have white caps crashing on our tree in our backyard.” The lower level of Hay’s home was flooded. He shared a video where he jokingly showed off his “indoor pool.” Downed trees, power outages, and damaged infrastructure were reported across the region. Part of a new bridge in Pensacola was reported missing by Wednesday morning. Hurricane Sally has lumbered ashore near Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 2 storm, with top winds of 105 mph. The coast is being pummeled with sideways rain and beach-covering storm surges. Sally's northern eyewall raked the Gulf Coast for hours before the center finally made landfall, delivering punishing wind and rain from Pensacola Beach, Florida, westward to Dauphin Island, Alabama. The National Hurricane Center says Sally will cause dangerous flooding from the Florida Panhandle to Mississippi and well inland in the days ahead. Nearly 500,000 homes and businesses are without power between Sally and Hurricane Laura's aftermath in Louisiana.
