President Donald Trump presented the Distinguished Flying Cross to seven members of the California National Guard who helped rescue over 200 people trapped by wildfires earlier this month. Trump said the National Guard pilots and crew members "embarked on a harrowing mission" Sept. 5, battling raging wind and blazing flames to rescue families who were trapped by the massive Creek Fire at the Mammoth Pool campground. The president said the group had to fly back "into the blazing fire" three times for ten hours to rescue a total of 242 people that evening. The soldiers have continued rescuing people from the growing wildfires over the past few days. "Our nation is strong because of remarkable individuals like these service members," Trump said during a speech at Sacramento's McClellan Airport. "In the midst of the greatest trials and biggest challenges, America prevails because of the brave and selfless patriots who risk everything so that they may save lives." The ceremony came as part of Trump's visit to California to meet with Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials about the fires that have killed dozens, burned millions of acres and forced thousands from their homes.
