Oregon Gov. Kate Brown told reporters Friday that "the violence must stop, period." The Democratic governor spoke at the start of a weekend that marks 100 consecutive nights of Black Lives Matter protests in the state's largest city, Portland. Many have been marred by vandalism, and chaos and there was a killing last weekend and the fatal shooting of the suspect on Thursday. Brown pointed to legislation and other initiatives to reduce racial discrimination and increase police accountability. "For those who have experienced racism and discrimination firsthand, I know that slow and steady progress toward justice doesn't feel fast enough," Brown said. "It isn't." The demonstrations have divided residents and made Portland a big focus of President Donald Trump's "law and order" re-election campaign theme. The slaying of a Trump supporter last weekend who was with a pro-Trump caravan has pushed the city toward a breaking point.
