Former President Trump arrived at a Manhattan courthouse Monday as his hush money trial got underway.

Why it matters: Trump is not only the first former president of the U.S. to ever stand criminal trial but does so as he appears all but set to be the Republican party's 2024 presidential nominee.

  • The New York hush money case is the first of four criminal cases that could see Trump stand trial.

The big picture: Trump is facing 34 felony counts for allegedly falsifying business records to cover up a payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

  • Prosecutors accuse Trump of allegedly instructing his former lawyer Michael Cohen to send the payment to Daniels during his 2016 presidential run.

State of play: While the trial won't be televised, Trump is expected to be in Manhattan court four days a week during the length of the trial, which could last up to eight weeks.
